Timing Chain

I just purchased a used 2000 Mazda MPV. It has 116,000kms on it. I asked if the timing belt had been changed and was told it had a timing chain. I have never had a timing chain break on me, but I know that if it ever did, it would be catastrophic. Has anyone else had a problem with their timing chain? Should I be concerned? I have been told that I can get a new timing chain installed for approximately $600.00, which I know is steep, but I want peace of mind.
