: My Grandmother made a sugar cookie, or a shortbread
: cookie, I do not know which it was I was so young, but
: it sometimes was brushed with maybe egg yoke and then
: sprinkled with sugar, sometimes she had raisins in
: them. They seem like they would have been rolled,
: maybe kneeded, they remind me more of a shortbread
: cookie, or scone. I remember, they sometimes had
: flour left on them. They, if I can remember, must have
: had only a few ingredients, like flour, sugar, eggs,
: vanilla, butter (Lard), but I can not find any one who
: would have had a reipe like this. I would like for my
: grandchildren to experience these cookies if I can
: find the recipe. Will you please help?

I have a recipe my Grandma used that sounds similar for a soft sugar cookie -- more like a big white cookie than the chewy kind of thin drop sugar cookies -- that might fit the bill.
2 eggs
1 c. buttermilk*
4 c. flour
1 cup shortening ( I use lard)
2 cups sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 heaping teaspoon baking powder
1 heaping teaspoon baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
* You can use l c. of milk with 1 tsp vinegar instead of buttermilk
Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs, buttermilk, salt and vanilla. Sift together 1 heaping teaspoon of soda, and 1 heaping teaspoon of baking powder,
nutmeg and flour. Add dry ingredients to the wet mixture.
Use 1-1/2 cups of flour to roll out. Cut out with a large biscuit cutter. Sprinkle with sugar
Bake at 375 degrees for 7 or 8 minutes.
