Posted by Vicki This is an very old German Cookie brought here by my great grand parents. 1 teaspoon each: cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar = put a pinch on each cookie before baking. Cream egg and butter well with wooden spoon....electric mixers make cookies tuff.... Add sugar...mix well. Add Vanilla...mix well Sift flour twice and add salt. Mix in 1/2 cup flour at a time...just until four is blended in well. Chill dough in covered bowl for 3 hours. ONLY remove what you are rolling out from the bowl. Keep the rest in the refrigerator. Roll out on lightly floured surface to 1/4 inch thick. She always used a linen kithen towel dusted with flour. Cut into circles, using floured glass or cookie cuters. Brush with milk and sprinkle with cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar. Fill cookie pan and put into freezer for 10 mins. Bake at 350 for 12-15 mins. Remove from hot pans immediately, cool on waxed paper. Store in tin, with tight lid, seperate layers of cookies with waed paper. For Chirstmas cookies.....roll to 1/8 inch and bake for only 5-8 mins...just to set the dough... Use colored sugar for tops. SOFT COOKIES: Add 1 cup milk to batter. Chill in refrigerator 2 hours, covered. Roll into walnut size balls, roll in sugar. Place 1 inch apart on cold cookie sheet. Bake 10 mins., or until edges are light bown....remove from oven and pan immediately...cool on kitchen towel.... Store in covered container. SUPER COOKIES...NO MATTER HOW YOU CUT THEM....

My Grandmother had two ways to make the same cookie you are describing. It was the 1,2,3, Sugar Cookie Recipe.
1 egg............room temperature, beaten well
1 cup butter.....room temperature, table butter,
not lard, not oleo (margarine).
2 cups sugar.....can be 1/2 br. sugar if you like.
3 cups flour.....sifted twice.
pinch of salt....about 1/8 teaspoon, there is salt in the
butter.
splash of vanilla...about a teaspoon.
Mix in spices with flour.

: My Grandmother made a sugar cookie, or a shortbread
: cookie, I do not know which it was I was so young, but
: it sometimes was brushed with maybe egg yoke and then
: sprinkled with sugar, sometimes she had raisins in
: them. They seem like they would have been rolled,
: maybe kneeded, they remind me more of a shortbread
: cookie, or scone. I remember, they sometimes had
: flour left on them. They, if I can remember, must have
: had only a few ingredients, like flour, sugar, eggs,
: vanilla, butter (Lard), but I can not find any one who
: would have had a reipe like this. I would like for my
: grandchildren to experience these cookies if I can
: find the recipe. Will you please help?
