I am an ATC in a outpatient orthopedic clinic. Athletic trainers do not work directly under the supervision of physical therapists. Athletic Trainers are under the guise of a doctor. What aspect of manual therapy, or evaluation do you have a problem with? Athletic Trainers learn in a working setting thoughout college as well as through internships required by the universities by observing in an orthopedic clinical setting. They are specifically taught to evaluate only orthopedic injuries to the musculoskeletal system. It is manditory for Athletic Trainers to seek continuing education units directed at enhancing the most current knowledge regarding healthcare trend just like MD's do. Is your concern in regards to billing? The AMA (American Medical Association) maintains the Athletic Trainer as an allied health care professional. This means part of a team (doctor, nurse, physical therapist, athletic trainer, etc.). The AMA CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) codes are not specific to Physical Therapist's. There are however specific codes that are applied to Athletic Training procedures that are not reimbursable to other professions and Im sure the same vice versa. The reimbursement of such procedures is dependent on each individual states laws, licensures and regulations. For more information check the NATA.org website. Then check your individual laws within your state.

: I would like to do some research on ATCs
: practicing in an outpatient orthopedic
: (physical therapy) clinic. I am specifically
: concerned with ATCs responsible for direct
: patient care under the supervision of a
: Physical Therapist.
: Obviously, different state practice acts will
: affect appropriate function. Where are ATCs
: the most involved (manual therapy,
: evaluations, etc)???
: Also, I would like to look for ATCs who act
: as managers or owners of such a practice.
: Doe anyone have any experience or direction
: regarding this topic?
: I appreciate any feedback available.
: Thanks.
