Posted by Will on 3/11/2004, 8:33 am, in reply to "Re: Internship vs. Curriculum Route Certification" I agree that independent learning can be beneficial, but too many internship programs have used students as free labor with almost no supervision. This practice has gone on for years. I personally went through a program that had little to no supervison most of the time. Our school had one ATC and about 10-12 students at a time in the program. The one ATC that we had was working on her PhD and was gone most of the time. This left just student trainers covering almost all games and practices unsupervised. Also, the course work required was a joke. All the NATA required was a one basic and one advanced athletic training classes along with a few supporting classes like A&P and biomachanics. The problem was no specific content was required in these classes. My advanced athletic training class was a complete joke. I had to completely learn the profession on my own, I was basically self taught. With the new accreditation standards this type of thing will not happen in the future. There will always be good and bad programs, but at least there will be some minimum standards. The big problem we have now is there are Too Many programs out there. ATC's are being produced in far greater numbers than jobs. ATC's are pretty much a dime a dozen right now and it's getting worse. But, I guess thats another topic.
