Happy Independence Day to all you old sailors out there. May the beer be cold and the fried chicken and potato salad be memorable. And let us pray that we're all here and sound in health next year at this time.

Talk about holiday spirit. Well yesterday afternoon, the 4th, a lovely warm sunny day. It was a case of stay at home and watch the women’s finals at Wimbledon or take a bus into Winchester and visit the library. By the way buses are free for the over 60’s in England so it saves you driving locally and parking etc. Anyway I decided to leave the missis at home to do the dishes after lunch and take a jaunt down into town. And do you know Winchester was alive with jollification, the town center was closed to traffic, there were scores of street stalls selling everything imaginable. There were tightrope walkers, jugglers, magicians and the milling population having a good time. As we headed into the depot I said to the old dear sitting alongside me ‘ is this the fourth of July’, she looked at her watch and said ‘yes it’s the fourth, they’re having the Hat Fair a little earlier this year’ Of course, it came to me, the famous Winchester Hat Fair which has taken place annually for the past five hundred years. So I forwent the library and joined in the festivities. As an afterthought I phoned the wife. ‘ Hello frog’ I said ‘ you’re missing a lot of fun here today’.
