Hello, My Dad was a Merchant Marine on the SS Umatilla from May through August 1945. I am trying to find a picture of the boat and/or crew. We are having a Freedom Riders celebration of WWII veterans in a few weeks. I cannot find information anywhere, and Dad died back in 1981. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks! Ann Toomey-Doane
For other photographs, please see this web page for sources of photographs of World War II-era merchant ships: http://www.usmm.org/photosource.html. A source of a photograph of UMATILLA may be the Mariners Museum in Newport News, Virginia. However, the second link for the Mariners Museum as displayed on the page I identify above is no longer valid. Instead, for help finding photographs and other materials held by the museum's library, contact library@marinersmuseum.org. The Mariners Museum will charge for copies of their photographs but I don't know how much.
Good luck.
