Thought I would share my thoughts about flag etiquette and our current Olympic athletes and see what some of you more mature gentlemen think. Now I have all the respect in the world for what these athletes do and I realize that none of them are purposely trying to disrespect the flag but every night I see things that make me cringe. Using the flag as a cape after and event, H... I even saw one athlete draping it upside down around her shoulders after winning and event. The other issue that really bugs me is autographing the flag, I have seen several athletes signing flags for fans. I myself I think that anyone who is representing the flag in a world setting should have to attend a flag etiquette class. Share your thoughts and let me know if I'm off my rocker in the way I'm thinking.

Jim, your remarks make me see red everytime I observe the actions of so many Americans during the past several years. I have written, spoken, and urged many people to pay attention to the flag ettiquette, etc., but to no avail. Patriotism is not in our DNA. Patriotism is NOT inherited. IT HAS to be taught.IT MUST be taught. I am very afraid that among MOST Americans it is terribly lacking today. Evidence is quite strong that proves that. Other than a relatively small number of men and women in our Armed Forces, Scouts, and some others, .....patriotism seems almost gone. That is a SAD, Sad truth.
Flag, patriotism...all thatsort of "stuff" is sadly missing from today's society. MOST Americans have NEVER been in military service, in the Scouts, and/or been part of any organization that makes part of its activities patriotic. They may say the Pledge but that is the extent of their patriotic activity. Patriotism HAS to be TAUGHT. IT MUST be taught. We could "lose" an entire generation by NOT teaching patriotism! I could discuss the subject for a long time but I feel as though I am preaching to the choir. You all know what I mean. Can patriotism be "revived"? YES...IF we get the right leadership in our FAMILIES, schools, colleges, Nation's Congress, and Whitehouse, and so forth. It will take a long time and it MAY NEVER happen! God help our nation if it doesn't make some huge adjustments in MANY categories SOON. Roy Brown

I agree with you . Have even seen one that looked like one corner of the flag was dragging on the floor.

I say it with profound sorrow but the truth is that this simply isn't the country we grew up in. That is not to say there are no longer any patriots among us, there are, obviously. But love of country seems to have gone out of fashion. The evidence goes far beyond the way some people treat our flag; it's how they sing the nationl anthem, as though it had been written by and for some rock group, and how we deal with murdering terrorists, as though they were entitled to the protections of our constitution. Can this be turned around? Can we be again what we were? I don't know. I hope so. -- Fran

Fran and all...I'm afraid you are quite right about the almost total lack of respect and patriotism in our nation today. It sickens me to observe some of the most disgraceful behavior one can imagine at various public events. I do believe that much of it comes from ignorance. Proper behavior isn't being taught in today's world. I have long tried to explain to many people that such things as patriotism is not part of our DNA. It is NOT "handed down through bloodlines. Patriotism MUST BE TAUGHT TO EACH GENERATION... CAREFULLY TAUGHT!! t simply isn't being TAUGHT these days! When our generation fades out completely I am afraid thatpatriotism will be on its LAST LEGS. I hope and pray I am wrong. May our fantastic nation DESERVE God's blessing. Roy Brwown
