My father, Joseph Donald Arthur Clement was assigned to the SS Henry Wynkoop. He joined the Navy on his 17th Birthday and after training was assigned to his post as a gunner. He has told us stories of his time of service taking supplies as part of the Armed Guard to Russia and sitting in his bunk in full uniform and gear hearing ships around him being sunk by the German wolf pac submarines. He went on to serve with the Coast Guard during the Korean War and then with the Air Force until his retirement in 1968. He spent time in Thiland using his carpentry skills in helping construct supplies to be sent to Vietnam. He recalls being "bombed" frequently. Dad worked as a carpenter after retiring and helped construct a house in middle Tennessee for a man who told him he was an officer on a German sub in the North Atlantic during WWII. Dad passed away in 2014, just short of his 88th Birthday. He was proud of his service and was awarded medals from Russia and France in the 90's. He enjoyed Patriotic days at church and other patriotic celebrations. The paper in Murfreesboro, TN featured him twice in articles.
