While researching my fathers service I have come across an entry in his service record that states " 10 Nov 43 to Point Montara for instruction till 14 Nov 43" This is just prior to his reporting to the SS OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES in San Diego as a member of the Armed Guard on 18 Nov 43. Can anyone shed any light as to what kind of Instruction this would be and is Point Montara the lighthouse on the approch to San Fransico bay?
Thank You

Hi Jim.
Yes, the Point Montara lighthouse is the facility your father was assigned to. During the war, the lighthouse housed several military units. One of those units was an anti-aircraft training unit. Since most Armed Guards were gunners, in all likelihood, your father was assigned here for gunnery training before being assigned to the Oliver Wendell Holmes.
