Cliff,
It is relatively unlikely that any of your former Armed Guard shipmates will happen to read your message and respond to it. Many and possibly most have already passed on, others may have no knowledge of the Armed Guard website and its message board, and others will have no interest or capability in online activity that may lead them to your message. Then again, you never know...
I have made a search of the subscription website Ancestry.com (www.ancestry.com) for members of the Armed Guard crew aboard SS SAN ANTONIO during 1944. Ancestry.com is more commonly used for genealogical research, but I have learned that it has information on the names of crew members of merchant ships that arrived in certain U.S. ports of entry following a voyage from a foreign destination. There is extensive information on some ports, such as New York, with lesser information available for other ports.
I found SAN ANTONIO arriving in New York at the end of three voyages in 1944. They were:
- Arrival in New York on 15 March 1944, following departure from Aruba on 7 March - Arrival in New York on 9 June 1944, following departure from Glasgow, Scotland, on 28 May - Arrival in New York on 25 July 1944, following departure from Aruba on 18 July
Following are the names of your Armed Guard shipmates, each of whom made at least one of these voyages with you:
Ralph E Anglin Ralph A Augustine Edward R Bayley Robert A Bowers Charles W Bryant Alfred L Butler Henry Cibrowski Robert B Dixon Donald E Dobson Joseph M Fernandes Michael C Garovich Michael F Geraghty Charles W Gilpin Francis V Hammersley Ronald T Hasbrook Vincent M Kelly Frederick E Knittel Henry A Kopochus Andrew W Koredie James A Kramer Arnold R Luttrell Bernard L Mangan Homer C Marky Vincent J Marsigliano Thomas E McBride James V McHenry Charles J McKendry William T Newman James B Parks, LT(jg) (Armed Guard commanding officer, voyage 1) Anthony J Pennino James L Phipps Deedie E Pilcher Zane L Price Charles A Pusterla Arthur M Reeder George J Schuller, LT (Armed Guard commanding officer, voyages 2 and 3) Earl L Scruggs Clinton E Stump Frederic T Suss, ENS (Armed Guard officer, voyages 2 and 3) John Valentino Robert M Walsh Frank L Zaher Bernard C Zwick
Do any of these names ring a bell with you? I have no idea whether these men are still alive, nor do I have contact information for any of them, with three exceptions.
James V. McHenry is a member of the U.S.N. Armed Guard World War II Veterans Association. You should contact the chairman of the Association to ask whether he has any information on James McHenry. Contact:

I have two other names that I have identified who may still be living and for whom I have contact information. I will send that information to you in a private e-mail.
