esteemed armed guard vets, i am reaching out for any men that served with my dad, paul pisano of brooklyn,ny, in the armed guard. he sailed out of ny on the joseph hooker and the thomas l.clingman. 1943-46 he did basic in sampson,ny and gunnery school in norfolk. i have only one picture of him & shipmates. it was on the clingman 6/11/44 and it was taken in iraq. it is a picture of 5 sailors and my dad. the back of the picture lists the men: williams (west va), watson (west va), bowen(s.carolina), mccarthy(chicago), cassell(n.carolina) and my dad. i would love to hear from anybody who served with my dad. i have finally obtained photos of his ships from mr. william hultgren of erie,pa. he is a dedicated man with an extensive collection that is a labor of love and dedication. either way regards to all armed guard vets and merchant marines- you are not forgotten here. paul pisano jr, toms river,nj
Hi Paul, I was hoping so much that one of the people in the picture you have was of my dad, but I would love to have a pic of the Clingman, if you could email me a copy. We never heard much about the war from my Dad. Maybe he talked more with my older brothers before he passed away, I'll have to find out.
A search of the subscription website Ancestry.com (www.ancestry.com) turns up three references to your father. Two were arrivals in New York of SS THOMAS L. CLINGMAN, the first on 8 August 1944 from Basra, Iraq, and the second on 28 October 1944 from Naples, Italy. On these two voyages your father is listed as Paul James Pisano, S1/c (seaman first class), serial number 816-90-77. Lists of his Armed Guard shipmates on the two voyages appear below; many of the same men sailed together on both voyages. The men you mention by last name all appear in the list below.
The third reference to your father is for the arrival of SS JOSEPH HOOKER in New York on 20 June 1945 from Le Havre, France. For this arrival your father is listed as Paul J. Pisano, S1/c. Again I list his Armed Guard shipmates below. One shipmate, Thomas A. Bowen, sailed with your father on all three voyages.
I do not know whether any of your father's shipmates are still living nor, if living, do I have contact information for them.
Two of your father's shipmates later joined the U.S.N. Armed Guard World War II Veterans Association, and that organization may know whether either is still living and would have contact information if they are. The two shipmates are John Curley (sailed with your father aboard THOMAS L. CLINGMAN) and Herman Raley (shipmate on JOSEPH HOOKER).
Here is contact information for the Armed Guard veterans association:

Good luck.
