As openers, I am a 63 yr-old retired USN officer whose Navy time was spent entirely in electronic warfare and signals intelligence. By definition, my medical support was what can be pretty well compared to 'socialized' medicine. For almost 33 years I and my family benefited from Navy medicine. Aside from being scared to death by a couple of findings over the years, I was excellently served by USN docs and Corpsmen. No matter where I was or to where I went, there was Sick Bay and professionals running it. Since retiring (no disability, thus very limited relationship with the VA), wife and I have been excellently supported by TRICARE STANDARD, which is another name for what used to be called "CHAMPUS." Here, in rural PA, we are too far from a military treatment facility to be on its rolls, and so civilian healthcare professionals fill the bill. We are very happy with TRICARE, the TRICARE Pharmacy service, and the potential to have "TRICARE FOR LIFE" when we are able to sign on with Medicare. As one with Parkinson's Disease I am very lucky to be able to benefit from a health program run by the Government. Bottom line: If we have health insurance and like its offerings, Congress should leave us alone. In essence, that is what our way of life is about: personal choice. If Washington is so hot to have a Single-Payer option, I believe that EVERY member of the Congress ought to be required to use it, at least for his/her first term. (One cannot know what the Murmansk Run is like until sighting Kildin Island in the Kola Gulf.) My best wishes and full respect go out to all MM and AG sailors. Steve Myers in Bedford, PA
