Depression days

The people who think we are in a "depression" like the one we older folk lived through are totally wrong.
There is NO comparison!
The last 1 1/2 or 2 generations are so used to having so much, and so many of them really believe they are actually "entitled" to so much, that any slight disruption of their "lifestyle"
probably seems like a "depression" to them!
The great depression lasted for, what seemed to be, an eternity! Only World War II brought the United States out of it.
I could go on for a LONG, LONG time and I'm sure many of you could, too.

Just had to add something. If we had a "depression" similar to that of the thirties it would, in my opinion, cause turmoil making the sixties look like a cake walk.
As the oldest of seven and born in 1923 going to work in a shoe factory in 1940 for $ 14.00 per week to help the family I doubt that the public could nor would accept it. Another stimulus, and another and another. Who knows, we may be put to the test down the road. Do not like to appear testy but Depression talk is so much nonsence.

Nonsense it may be. Economic forecasting is a chancy business. But I wouldn't rule out anything. Despite all the brave talk by the new crowd in Washington, the numbers I see are almost all discouraging, and if the Bank of Almerica is in trouble we're all in trouble, serious trouble. I have clear memories of the Great Depression: turned collars, cardboard insoles. lots of navy beans, and little hope for a better tomorrow. I wish the Obama administration every success, but I fear they have created such expectations that when they fail to deliver -- and they're sure to fail in some areas -- there will be much disappointment, followed by who knows what.

I think Fran's comments are closer to the truth. We simply don't know at this point what's going to happpen. Things have just started to unravel and there's a lot of bad news still to come. This could go on for years. Economists are stumped. You can't just prime the pump and turn things around any more, and there has been and still is a lot of corruption in our financial system. Try to preserve your safety net, if you have one, and be prepared for hard times.

I appreciate the insight that all of you have. This and a million other reasons are why I wish my sweet Daddy were still alive. His family suffered terribly during the Depression unlike my mother's family who lived on a farm. They suffered, too, but at least they had food.

These times scare me for so many reasons. My mother, who is 88, says that she doesn't know if the younger generation would actually know how to deal with true depression like times....that they would not have the survival skills or the ingenuity. She doesn't say that critically, but how many 20 somethings know how to can vegetables, mend socks, etc.

I wish the current administration all the luck in the world and I believe that they have good intentions, but I'm fearful that there will be a day of reckoning for this huge spend out. It scares me for my children and grandchildren.

Hello Roy How are you doing? Was getting worried, how is the rehab going? I am too young to remember the depression.Born in 1938 as we were comming out of it. My dad said he got to the point that he could look at a rabbit track and tell mom how many dumplings to make. Guess when you have 12 kids to feed you develope a good eye. Lived on a farm so we grew what we ate. You are right about kids today being spoiled my grand kids could'nt live without their cell phones.We did'nt even have electricity untilldad sold the farm and we moved into town, that was in 1945. Yes GOD bless America and all who fought to keep us free. Thanks to you and all the men in service then and now. this is getting long guess I had better sign off. Take care and hang in there with the rehab.
