As you know, there are guys like me who are following a long, winding trail, tracing the history of our fathers, grandfathers, etc. I have spent the past 10 years trying to piece together the history of my fathers 20 year naval career. As is all too common, he never volunteered much information, and we were too stupid to ask.
This site and the postings on it have helped me piece together parts of that history, since my father passed away more than 23 years ago. I am mad at myself for not asking the questions, but grateful that there are still guys left from that time who are willing to share what they can.
I get as much satisfaction from helping someone else find a piece of information as I do finding my own pieces. There is no way that I can say thank you enough to those of you who have helped me, so I go out of my way to try to help the others who are struggling like I have.
I know now that I will continue to keep the memory and spirit of the Armed Guard alive as long as I am able. I have such great pride in the fact that my father served the entire war in the Armed Guard, and only wish that he lived long enough for me to tell him that.
My generation and those that followed have somehow lost the significance of what you all went through and what it really means to us today. To you all, there are no words to express the gratitude and appreciation I feel.
I only hope that I can continue to contribute to that search that so many others are following.
