HI HOW YOU GUYS DOING,IAM TRYING TO FIND OUT A LITTLE ABOUT MY DADS TIME IN THE NAVY 3/4/43-3/10/46. DAD PAST AWAY LAST YEAR AND ALL I HAVE ARE SOME PAPERS AND A FEW PHOTOS. HE SERVED IN THE PACIFIC.ONE OF THE PAPERS ARE FORM BOAT POOL 15-1 MANILA P.I. 1945 FROM LIEUT W.D.REED USN COMMANDING OFFICER.DADS ASIATIC-PACIFIC MEDAL HAS THREE STARS ON IT.CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT THE STARS ARE FOR AND ANY THING ABOUT BOAT POOL 15-1 IN 1945 THANK JOE

Ralph:

Boat Pools were sometimes called "water taxi's". These were small boat groups that were assigned to service the larger ship's while they were in port. The boat pool was responsible for bringing supplies to the ships, transporting men to and from the ships, etc. I don't have any specific information on pool 15-1, but 1945 was a very critical time for US forces in the PI, as it represented the re-taking of the islands from the Japanese.

Joe,

As to the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, it was awarded for 30 days of service in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater in specified campaigns between December 7, 1941 and March 2, 1946. I presume it could be awarded to a man from any of the services, not just the Navy. The medal was established November 6, 1942.

There were 21 designated campaigns associated with the Asiatic-Pacific medal. One bronze star was awarded for participation in each additional campaign after the first one. Therefore your father must have served at least 30 days during each of four of the designated campaigns. I haven't yet been able to pin down what a boat pool was in general or anything about boat pool 15-1 in particular but will continue searching. Can any of you Navy Armed Guard vets shed any light on this? From what I have found so far I would say boat pools did not apply to the Armed Guard but were relevant to operations in the fleet.
