Several things here.
First of all, what was your father's name and birth year?
Second, do you know whether he was in the merchant marine or in the U.S. Navy?
If he was in the merchant marine, he would not have been aboard a "USS" ship. USS means United States Ship and is reserved for commissioned vessels in the U.S. Navy. If in the merchant marine he would likely have been aboard a ship designated "SS" meaning steam ship and identifying a merchant vessel. And if in the merchant marine, he may have sailed in several vessels during the war, not just one.
If he was in the U.S. Navy he would not have been in the U.S. Navy Armed Guard, which is the focus of this message board and associated website, along with the merchant marine. There were no cooks in the Armed Guard, only in the merchant marine and regular Navy.
Finally I cannot find a ship named BURTON EVAN or any name close to that. I found a SS EDWARD W. BURTON but that seems like a reach.
Let me know.
