The trouser assessory braces, or suspenders as they are known in N.Amer.
have been the source of much debate in recent times.
Belts, as a means of support have taken over to a large extent. But not
for us devotees of suspenders (note I used the term suspenders and not
braces. This will make easier for those in N.Amer. not to become
confused.)
Belt users can be spotted by the fact that they are always trying to hitch
up their trousers. And are forced to do this because men do not have hips as ladies do. So trousers are trying continually to obey the law of gravity.
Suspender men smile in the confident knowledge that their trousers always hang smartly and to the correct length.
As far as health is concerned it has been long known that tight belts do
irreparable harm to internal organs. So much so that the Swedish Institute
for Clothing Attributes has stated that suspender users can expect to live
ten to fifteen years longer than belt people.
Ps. Those things that hold up socks are known as suspenders in England.
