I wss delighted to read this account on your father's service with the GEORGE E. PICKETT. I am currently restoring a vintage Van Ryper model of that ship for a client on Martha's Vineyard... Van Ryper was a noted modelmaker of naval and liner models, many of which were commissioned by the Navy for WW II strategic manuevering.
For the posterity of your son's possible Collection of his grandfather and ship, GEORGE E. PICKETT, you might want to look on Ebay from time to time to see if there are any Van Ryper models floating around on this ship.
Your post of 2012 certainly helps with my blog on the GEORGE E. PICKETT and I thank both you and the webmaster for this invaluable information.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you, sir.
