My life is slipping away before my very eyes and I’m doing nothing
about it!
I’ll never reach the fame of Julius Caesar who not only had this month
named after him but also the caesarian birth procedure.
So I’m goin’ to sit right down and write about New Jersey a much under
estimated State. And I’ll start with the fact that my grandfather Harrison
Taylor was from that State. Well actually he wasn’t but my grandmother
a school teacher from England, was in the late 1800’s, visiting her four
brothers who, after emigrating, had set up a silk weaving business in
Paterson N J.
Taylor who was a friend of theirs was on a visit from Richmond VA.
And you may have guessed what happened. Yes he sailed back to ‘Jolly
Old’ with her, they married here and raised a family.
I know little about Harrison apart from the fact that his father was an
officer in the Confederate States Navy.
So what is it about New Jersey that doesn’t attract romantic poets and
song writers? You never hear No.1 on the charts as being ‘ My kind
of town Trenton is’ or ‘Carry me back to Old New Jersey’. But that
would be a little confusing as you wouldn’t know if it was old or new.
By the way Jersey is one of Channel Islands, where my wife, her of
the red feathers, is from, just off the coast of France.
So get cracking you men of many talents and start singing the praises
of this downtrodden, maligned, forgotten and swept under the carpet
State of New Jersey.
Bob Taylor
