I also have some memories that live on always:
On 11 May 1944 we were in convoy UGS-40 in the Mediterranean when we were attacked by 62 JU-88 torpedo planes and many high level bombers.
Our convoy consisted of 18 Navy escort ships and about 65 merchant ships.
They dropped ninety-some torpedoes and many bombs at us.
The attack was the most massive single attack against such a convoy in the war. In addition we shot down more enemy aircraft than any other single convoy attack . We shot down at least 22 planes and damaged many others.
Thank God not a single ship was hit except minor
shrapnel, etc.
The Germans made many exaggerated claims...all lies about their "success" against us.
The attack lasted about 40 minutes. It was my first combat and was the evening before my 18th
birthday! Of course I've never forgotten it!!
