To follow up on Bob's question, I'm curious if Armed Guard sailors had hammocks only during basic training, or did you also carry them aboard ship when you went to sea? Since I presume most/many/all merchant ships (and ships in the fleet for that matter) would have had bunks, if you took hammocks with you when reporting aboard, what purpose would hammocks have served? Seems like they would have become just another bulky object in your way.
As you can tell, I'm not an Armed Guard or Navy veteran.
