This is a very late response, but I've only just come across this site. I have letters from my grandfather, a Merchant Marine named McDavid, who was on the American Farmer from April to August 1945. He was the First Asst Engineer. I am researching the material now. His letters from early June 1945 tell of almost unbearable heat which is making everyone uncomfortable. On June 26 he says they are in a small "native town" which has 7 Catholic churches. He tells also of local police guard aboard their ship while they're in port and that they can get no mail there, partially because it seems to be off their usual route, too small, and it is monsoon season.
