Hi Bob, I was there when it happened. I was in Convoy PQ-13 aboard the SS Eldena as a Navy Armed Guard gunner and saw part of that battle. The Trinidad limped in to Murmansk for repairs only to be sunk later on her return voyage to the UK. On our return voyage in QP-11, the HMS Edinburgh, carrying 5 tons of Russian gold, was hit by 2 torpedoes from U-456 blowing off her stern. There is a lot more to this tragic event, but I won't go into any further details. Suffice to say it was a dangerous time to be on the Murmansk Run. Cheers, John Haynes
