It is interesting to note that the first Armed Guard crew #1E of WWII (seven men under a coxswain) went aboard the SS Dunboyne on 2 December 1941. Before sailing four more were added including the C.O. Ens. Rufus Brinn.
While in port in Murmansk Dunboyne was berthed next to Eldena for off-loading war materals. We were under constant attack by Nazi bombers and dive bomber. Both ship's AG crews were credited by the Russian Government of shooting down German bombers and were given a months bonus pay. Both ships departed Murmansk April 28 in Convoy QP-11 and returned to the US safely.
