I am briefly putting on my other hat, as webmaster for Project Liberty Ship in Baltimore, which owns and operates Liberty ship SS JOHN W. BROWN. I am also a volunteer crewman and member of the Board of Directors.
SS JOHN W. BROWN been challenged by SS JEREMIAH O'BRIEN, the only other operating Liberty ship, home-ported in San Francisco, to see who gets more "Likes" on Facebook in the next two weeks. Here's what those rascals in San Francisco have dared say:
"We hereby challenge our sister Liberty ship, the good SS JOHN W. BROWN of Baltimore, to a Facebook 'Like' competition. The terms: whomever gets more 'Likes' in the next two weeks -- by March 4th (which is our namesake Jeremiah O'Brien's actual birthday) -- gets two free tickets to a cruise on San Francisco Bay aboard JEREMIAH O'BRIEN. Other fabulous prizes (might) apply! Crew of the SS JOHN W. BROWN, are you up to this challenge?"
You bet we are, you scurvy dogs!
JEREMIAH O'BRIEN started out with 843 Likes and JOHN W. BROWN began with 553. Since the challenge began the likes for both Facebook pages have increased: as of this posting there are 883 for JEREMIAH O'BRIEN and 607 for JOHN W. BROWN.
(Now if you don't know what I'm talking about to this point, you probably don't have a Facebook page. But if you do have a Facebook page or want to create one, or have family and friends who have Facebook pages, I'm talking to YOU.)
Please ask your family and friends to help JOHN W. BROWN win the challenge. Even if we do not win, this challenge will get the two ships' names out there so more people know about them. It is important that more people learn about these two ships. It means more members, more volunteers, more donations, more cruise passengers and more publicity, thus helping to preserve these two grand Liberty ships. It's a win-win no matter who wins. So please ask your family and friends to help.
Getting a Facebook page is easy. Go to www.facebook.com and follow the directions on the sign-in page. Then, to find JOHN W. BROWN's page, go to http://www.facebook.com/libship312. Once on that page, under the photo of the ship, is a box on the right that says LIKE. Click it to be a Facebook Friend with the ship. Just as with JEREMIAH O'BRIEN, we will give two free cruise tickets to a lucky, randomly selected Facebook Friend as well as some other prizes, to be determined. Now put out the word.
Of course you could "Like" JEREMIAH O'BRIEN instead, just don't tell me! The JEREMIAH O'BRIEN Facebook page is at http://www.facebook.com/SSJeremiahOBrien.
You are now being returned to your regularly scheduled Armed Guard website message board.
Thank you.
