Coast Guard investigations and other things....

I'm really glad to see some of the more senior Mariners on this message board because some one of those may remember and know the answers to my questions. I would like, for one thing, to know when a mariner on board a Liberty Ship in 1945 was shot, where would he likely have gotten a 45 caliber automatic pistol to use to do the shooting? (supposedly shot himself in the head)In his list of possessions that were boxed up and sent back home, the gun was not one of the items. What might have happened to it and where did he get it? Were Mariners likely to own guns on board the ship??? Also, I would like to know if anyone remembers just what the person on ship who investigated might have done to determine whether it was suicide or murder? Also, why are Coast Guard records of these matter said to be destroyed 10 years after the occurrence? Thanks for any knowledge anyone may contribute.
