I sailed on 8 ships.When we were in port one of the Armed Guard crew was assigned to Gangway watch. He was issued a 38special or Colt 45. Depending what the Navy issued- Also some ships had a couple of Springfield 30-06 rifles To shoot at mines, as the other guns would not depress that low for a shot.
