I was so thrilled to receive your message but saddened to hear of the loss of your Father.I consider your Dad one of my Hero's. It was those who served in WWII that I feel saved America. My Dad turned 90 yrs. old on Dec,7 and is still taking care of my Mom..She will be 90 on Thursday. But both of them are breaking fast. My Dad loves to talk about his days as a gunner on the SS Emma Willard. I was able to get a picture of the vessel for him, through Newport News Ship Building.
Again I am so appreciative for your response..My Dad Willis Broadus Taylor Sr. was drafted and went to Camp Perry, Va for basic training, then to Camp Shelton, Va. for Gunnery School..From there he was shipped out on the SS Emma Willard with the Armed Guard Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Dad, if his memory has not failed him to much, has told me they took Army troops to Southern France picked up soldiers on the Island of Corsica,Italy and Sicily and took them to Marsalis,France when the war was about over.He was then sent home from Marsalis to Charleston, S.C.by a destroyer, but couldn't remember the name of it, to be discharged Nov. of 1945.
If I can find out more info, I will let you know. I am trying to get copies or ribbons that Dad may have received, but haven't gotten all of the info I need..I need to get a copy of his DD214. The one he has is all ragged now..
By the way, we are from Asheville, N.C. and when my Son was in the Army, he took his Basic at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo..It was beautiful there..The drive from St.Louis down to the base was awsome...We stopped at the Meri Mack Caverns, and a little Jessy James Museum..
My e-mail address is carolyntmoore@bellsouth, and phone is 828-681-5802. Thank you again and may you and your family be blessed...And again Our HERO'S never die but forever remain alive in our heart's and memories.. Sincerly, Carolyn
