As we had no radio or electricity. We heard about it by the grapevine. I was 14 lacking one month of being 15 when this took place. My older brother who was several years out of High School and working in CC camps plus playing semi pro ball went in the Army Air Force and was in India and Burma fighting the Japanese. My other brother was still in school and enlisted in the Navy at 17 and was on an LST in the Pacfic and was in many invasions including Iwo Jima. When I reached 16. I quit school and went to work in the Boston Navy Yard building destroyers. I had to do something for the war effort. Then when I became 17 I enlisted in the Navy. Boot Camp at Sampson, NY. Then Armed Guard training at Norfolk. Then to Brooklyn AGC. Assign to the SS Alexander Martin. Made two trips. V E declared. Then back to Norfolk for more training. To T. I. and assigned to SS Vanderbilt Victory and to Iwo Jima staging for the invasion of Japan.
