I enjoy your posting regarding the Murmansk runs. My father also participated in these, most likely runs to Murmansk during 1944. He was a merchant mariner on the Hawkins Fudske, also on the Zane Grey. He talked off locomotives being part of the cargo. He will be 88 on Oct. 4th and is in great health for his age. His name is George Ice. We're from east central Indiana. Historically, he also graduated from the same high school as actor James Dean and rode Jim on his motorcycle numerous times when Jim was in his late childhood and early teens. Jim also wrote him while he served in the merchant marine. We also have significant amount of Russian coins and currency from the 1940s. We also have a souvenir knife that Russians made from downed German aircraft around Murmansk. Dad talked of two or three ships lost during a convoy... one filled with ammunition was completely demolished with a very loud explosion.
