I don't think that popular music had gone entirely off the rails by the time you refer to. I remember the '60s as a time of updated country music, notably performed by groups like the Carpenters. Of course, I was still clinging to the songs of the '40s, as I do to this day. It's difficult to think of anyone waxing nostalgic about the rap rot of today. Wine and roses and "do it to me one more time"? Doesn't raise any goosebumps here.
