I'm having a lot of trouble identifying DELAWARE. There were a great many ships that used that name, either alone or as part of a longer name. Many were tugs, barges, even a battleship, or were built far too early or much too recently, all of which more than likely don't fit your information.
You may want to do a search at this very comprehensive website: http://shipbuildinghistory.com/. The search option is found at the bottom of the home page.
Other possibilities are LORD DELAWARE, a World War II Liberty ship (built 1942, scrapped 1971) and PAN DELAWARE (originally built with a different name in 1918 but named PAN DELAWARE between 1938 and 1947).
A search of the Armed Guard website (see http://armed-guard.com/search-new.html) turns up no fewer than 16 Armed Guard veterans who self-identify their service aboard PAN DELAWARE, some in 1944-1945. So that may be a promising possibility.
Good luck.
