I have found information about a ship named P.E. CROWLEY but nothing to confirm that it ever operated as a troop transport. (USAT = U.S. Army Transport.)
The ship in question was constructed by the Buffalo Dry Dock Company, Buffalo, New York, in 1899(!). She was originally named BUFFALO, was renamed P.E. CROWLEY in 1925, sold to a Finnish shipping company and renamed again to KURRIKA in 1947, and finally scrapped in 1953. See http://shipbuildinghistory.com/history/shipyards/2large/inactive/amshipbuffalo.htm and scroll to hull number 90. Assuming this was the correct ship, she certainly was not sunk. I have not found any information that she was damaged either.
