Hi, Bob. I never crossed the equator in a ship, either Navy or Merchant, but I have crossed it many times while flying a DC-3 in Africa during 1959-63 and in Uganda on a missionary trip in 2005, but I never had a chance to become a shellback. I crossed the Arctic Circle twice on the SS Eledna during the Murmansk Run to Russia in 1942 and many times while living and flying in Alaska, but again, no ceremonies involved. John Haynes
