I was assigned for the most part out of the Brooklyn AGC, and fetched up in New Orleans late in the war, toward the end of 1944, as I recall. At that time, radiomen on ships arriving at East Coast ports were being sent back to Brooklyn and on to fleet assignments. Foolishly, I asked if I could go to a merchant ship headed up that way. I was sent to a tanker that proceded to Baytown, Texas, where it took on cargo and then headed out to the Pacific, which I thought I'd seen enough of. New Orleans was a great liberty town; the AGC was something else.
