Portugal in WWII"
I was aboard the troopship J. W. McAndrews sailing in a convoy from the United States to England about January 1945 when it collided with a French aircraft carrier,The Bearn. 114 troops were killed as a result. The convoy abandoned our ship and we limped along until we reached the Azores. The troops aboard our ship wanted to go ashore and a mutiny resulted. Finally, the officers in charge allowed groups of ten troops at a time to go ashore for two hours. Some of the troops never came back to the ship and may still be living in the Azores. There were indications that German U-boats were operating outside the harbor and we remained there for about a week. Subsequently, we transferred to a British ship that took us to Liverpool, England.
