Grandfather MM2 Jos. Prokop

I'm trying to piece together my grandfathers Naval service. It's been difficult even though I have a copy of a form listing all of his duty stations, unfortunately I don't believe it's in chronological order. It lists AGC Brooklyn NY but as a 2nd class Motor Machinist Mate and no Merchant Marine ship duty listed, I find it perplexing as to why he would be there. He was on landing craft and an ocean going tug, the Hitchiti. Would he have been there to learn how to shoot various anti-aircraft guns or just as as a transient? If someone could shed some light on this it would be appreciated. His service dates were Nov 42 - Oct 44, I have no idea when he would have been at the AGC.
