according to my father's notes, his ship was on its way from Cuba to Philadelphia and was hit by a munitions ship while in the Chesapeake Bay. the hole was large enogh to drive a pick truck through and was 16 inches from the magazines. two holes floodedas did the magazines aft. They were able to beach the ship and with help the next day the ship got to Philadelphia. Happened in 1944
