The Indianapolis was cruising at only 15 knots and was not zigzagging when it was torpedoed. It could do around 30 knots and it is surprising that it was proceeding so slowly, and at such slow speed it should have been zigzagging was the opinion of the court-martial. It had delivered parts of the atom bomb which would be dropped on Hiroshima to the island of Tinian and was on its way to Leyte Gulf sailing alone when it was hit.
