Probably the greatest number of Americans lost in a sinking at sea during WWII was the sinking of the HMT Rhona in the Med off the Algerian coast in November of 1943 by a glider bomb radio-controlled by a German aircraft. Over 1,000 American army air corps personnel lost their lives and three or four Red Cross personnel, who were accompanying the troops to the China-Burma-India theater of operations.
