I don't remember any big greetings of returning home or departures. The movements and departures
were so huge and constant during WW11. People did
it in other ways. But I do remember being on a troop train from Norfolk to San Francisco and going through the Southern States and at every
stop we were greeted by Southern Ladies with all
kinds of goodies and well wishies. What a morale
builder. People were always inviting you to their home to share a meal. Thats
how I met my wife in Richmond, Ca. And elected to
be discharged in Ca. instead of going back to Maine. Times were so different back them. The people back home were on rations, gas was scarce which meant things had to be done close to home.
So you can imagine what it was like then and what it is now.
