Speaking only for myself, I have never had a reason to contact the Imperial War Museum for convoy information. I have often searched for convoy-related information on the ConvoyWeb website (http://www.convoyweb.org.uk/), with considerable success. ConvoyWeb is not entirely comprehensive but it serves my purpose.
If you are not already aware of it, you may wish to pose your question at MARHST-L (a maritime history listserv), which is an active community of maritime enthusiasts. The listserv membership includes many individuals from the U.K., Canada, Australia and New Zealand (as well as the U.S. and other countries) who seem very knowledgeable about British maritime research sources. You might post your inquiry, get an answer and leave, or stick around for fascinating discussions about everything from Persian and Greek naval battles in antiquity to modern-day concerns about piracy off Somalia. Many discussions focus on World War II. See http://www.marmuseum.ca/marhst.html for information about subscribing to the listserv.
