I am helping Diane hunt down info on her Uncle. Family history is that he spent some time in the water resulting in serious medical issues that took his life a few years later.
We believe that his "accident" may have occurred while on the Thorstein Veblen, in Convoy JW-56A (Loch Ewe to Kola Inlet), January 12-28, 1944.
This convoy encountered very bad weather, with 5 ships turning back and the remaining taking refuge in Iceland for several days before proceeding to Russia. It is possible that he was washed overboard, but recovered, during the storms.
Later in that convoy, 10 U-Boats attacked the convoy, sinking 3 merchant ships and one destroyer. Also possible that the Veblen was hit but survived the attack, with her uncle ending up in the water, but I can't find any records of the Veblen sustaining damage.
Diane would love to find out what happened to her Uncle, so if you have any info on this convoy or these ships, please help her out. Meanwhile, I am continuing to chase other leads down.
Thanks for any info you have.
Regards,
Rick
