Re: YouTube videos on Murmansk Run
Back in October of 2008 there was a ceremony at Loch Ewe, Scotland, honoring the people who had sailed in the Arctic convoys. Several countries, including Russia, sent representatives, but only a few convoy veterans were able to attend, including Spud Campbell, the radioman on the Liberty ship Henry Bacon, the last ship sunk by the Luftwaffe in WWII, about which I posted on this site a few months ago. The article about the ceremony contains a lot of pictures of the veterans, the representatives, the beautiful scenery at Loch Ewe, including the Pool House, formerly a command center, and now a hotel containing a dining room named the Henry Bacon in honor of that famous ship. http://forargyll.com/2008/10/october-2008-artic-convoy-tribute-at-loch-ewe/
. Or simply typing: "the Pool House at Loch Ewe", in your browser should do the trick. In June of 1944, my ship showed up at Loch Ewe on its way to Russia, but British engineers in inspecting our ship found that our boilers were too risky for the Arctic and we went around to the east coast of England and unloaded. In any case, the Normandy invasion had cancelled all Russian convoys for a couple of months.
