The encounter between SS STEPHEN HOPKINS and the German raider STIER is one of the epic stories of World War II, all the more so for the courage and success of a lightly armed Liberty ship, sailing alone, being able to sink a more heavily armed opponent. Incidentally the aerial photograph of a Liberty ship in this article is an excellent guide for the location of the guns on the ship, which was the original topic of this thread. Note also the airplanes carried as deck cargo, lashed down atop hold #3 on the foredeck and hold #4 on the afterdeck.
