I am a WWII US Navy Armed Guard veteran and served aboard the SS Eldena on its convoy voyage through the North Atlantic to Murmansk Russia Jan 1942 to June 1942. During this voyage we encountered many enemy attacks from submarines, surface vessels and aircraft. While in Russia some 30 days, we were under constant air attack. Our gun crew was credited by the Russian Government of shooting down 3 enemy bombers and the Russians gave the entire crew a months pay. That and a letter of commendation has been the only recognition ever received for this duty.
I am interested in the WWII Merchant Marine & Armed Guard chapter in Indiana.
