Good question, Melissa, on a subject that has probably irritated a lot of people for a lot of years. I think "Victory at Sea," the made-for-television documentary, is still the most accurate account of the naval war. Most of what Hollywood turned out on the war, particularly during the war, was propaganda, with little regard for reality. Although the films dealing with the Navy almost invariably list a naval officer as technical adviser in the credits, the flaws are glaring. The actors portraying enlisted men almost never manage to look like real sailors and junior officers are usually addressed by rank rather than the proper "mister." At least two films, "Harm's Way" and "Mister Roberts," were based on novels written by reserve officers who saw hard active duty and are believable. You are not making a pest of yourself.
