I don't think it was generally recognized until a good bit later that the Midway battle was the turning point in the Pacific war. Further, I don't think many of us ever doubted the war's outcome but thought until well into it that it might last forever. We used to talk about what we'd do after the war, even though we had no clear idea when or how peace would be restored. If nothing else, those years in the Navy gave us ample time to think seriously about what we'd do back in the real world.
