Well said, Al. You make it clear that not all of us had the same experience. For example, on none of the four ships I served on did I ever see a merchant sailor get near the guns, much less take part in serving them. On one ship, I (a radioman) spent some time charging 20mm. magazines but only because I asked the gunnery officer for something to do. That was In port (sort of -- in Salerno Bay) and, since the radio shack was secured, I had nothing to do.
